Destiny 2’s latest raid, Salvation’s Edge, has amused players with its curious design choice of scattering powerful loot throughout the Witness’s lair. Some players questioned the logic behind the Witness providing gear perfectly suited for Guardians to use against it during the raid.
Despite this in-game inconsistency, the placement of powerful weapons and armor aligns with Destiny 2’s overall reward system and gameplay mechanics, showcasing the balance between lore and game design.

A Destiny 2 player amused their fellows in the community by pointing out a humorous, unaddressed aspect of the game”s new raid. Called Salvation”s Edge, the new raid debuted in Destiny 2 as part of The Final Shape, its latest expansion.
Destiny 2: The Final Shape has reenergized the Destiny playerbase, which seemed demoralized after backlash to Destiny 2 Lightfall, the 2023 expansion. Bungie blundered in Lightfall by spreading its storytelling over the course of the year and the game”s seasons rather than providing an experience that was satisfactory on its own. But after a lengthy delay in the development of The Final Shape that saw the game extend its final season and receive a free extension in the form of the Into the Light update, Bungie stuck the landing, closing out Destiny”s long-running Saga of Light and Darkness with a raid against the source of the universe”s many troubles: The Witness.

It was during the Salvation”s Edge raid to finally defeat The Witness that user ActuallyJustADude had a thought: Why would The Witness sow their own lair with the very Destiny 2 armor and weapons perfectly fitted for its deadliest, most persistent enemies? They posed the question to the game”s community on Reddit, much to its amusement.
Destiny 2 Player Wonders at The Witness” Self-Sabotage in Salvation”s Edge Raid
In their post, ActuallyJustADude wondered at The Witness” reasoning for scattering tons of highly powerful loot perfectly suited to be worn and wielded by Guardians throughout its own stronghold. The Witness itself doesn”t use the gear, as even during the last boss fight of Salvation”s Edge it relied on its array of powers to destroy its foes. So why give the Guardians such potent upgrades?Close
Naturally, some players pointed out that this is merely the nature of Destiny 2. Even creatures with decidedly non-human proportions or forms will regularly drop human-scaled weapons and armor after being defeated in combat, after all. The same goes for raid locations, as Bungie seeded the Salvation”s Edge raid with secret chests full of some of the game”s best gear. In other words, Destiny 2 is a video game with a reward system based on loot and gear upgrades, so it would be natural for it to be there.
Some players posited more “lore-friendly” answers that might make sense within the story of Destiny 2 itself. In the case of Salvation”s Edge, they pointed out that The Witness actively courted the Guardians” influence before settling on war. In previous storytelling, The Witness offered Guardians a position by their side as Disciples, trying to tempt them with armor and weapons fit for a raid boss.
