Concord, a game that is aiming to become the next big hero-shooter, has revealed its beta rewards. Concord is being developed by people who have been previously worked on titles like Halo, Call of Duty, and Destiny. Based on that experience, there appears to be plenty of hope for the title”s success.
PlayStation has been betting on this game”s success for some time now. Sony bought Concord developer Firewalk Studios prior to anything about the game being revealed to the public, which led gamers to assume that whatever the studio was up to, it must be good. In order to test the waters, Concord is holding an open beta that will ideally allow players to give enough feedback to make the final product the smash-hit that Firewalk and Sony clearly want it to be.

Players who engage with the Open Beta, which will end July 21, will get a “Lil” Frog” weapon charm and a “Star Flare” Business Card when Concord launches on August 23. In-game, Frog stands for From Orbit to Ground, a reference to the ship the characters are seen using in cutscenes. The Business Card is a design players can use as more proof that they played the Beta, since it will be shown whenever users share their info with each other.

While these rewards are a nice gesture, the overall reaction to Concord can be interpreted as mixed at best. Although Firewalk Studios has plenty going for it when it comes to developer pedigree, and there are plenty of positive impressions about its core gameplay, getting players interested in all the ideas and lore that it has to offer seems like an increasingly difficult task. Epic Games and Fortnite appear to have achieved a sweet-spot with massively popular titles where throwing everything at the universe that”s been built so far just seems to work, and with a divisive $40 price tag and plenty of competition in the realm of live service titles (as well as the hero shooter genre), the game is facing an uphill battle.
With Concord, plenty of players as well as those curious about the game have made comparisons to Guardians of the Galaxy. It”s evident that this is where Concord draws much of its character and aesthetic inspiration from, but seeing more of the game”s unique identity ahead of its launch might help draw in players; titles like Overwatch have done this successfully by releasing a series of shorts to show off the game”s universe. Concord does plan to similarly drip-feed its lore through weekly cinematic vignettes, but sharing some of these sooner rather than later could prove useful.
