While the latest Spawn movie adaptation has been in the works for ages now, the Ip’s creator recently took to social media to give fans a major update about the project, starting the countdown till its production kicks off.

Spawn has been one of the most popular comic book characters outside of the DC/Marvel dichotomy since his inception in Image Comics’ 1992 Spawn #1. Created by Todd McFarlane, the series would tell the titular character’s story as a mercenary who was tricked into returning to life as a hellspawn after his death and rightful damnation. While the IP has been adapted into all sorts of media, including an earlier live action movie, McFarlane would announce another one in 2015 and confirm his completion of the script in 2016, which would eventually be attached to Blumhouse for production in 2017.

While fans expected more news on the film to follow shortly after that 2017 announcement, the success of 2019’s Joker, the sensational DC Elseworlds project that also spawned one of the most anticipated sequels of 2024, caused the entire project to restart due to the feasibility of an R-Rated comic book adaptation on the table. Since then, there have been many additions to the team and even a casting for the lead role in Jamie Foxx, and now fans have even more good news to celebrate. Creator Todd McFarlane took to X (formerly Twitter) to reveal that the new script was finally finished, posting an image with the cover page. This also doubled as a reveal of the film’s final title, King Spawn.

This was a follow-up to a graphic posted the previous day promising some news on the film, though many fans didn’t want to get their hopes up about the nature of the announcement. With the creative team and lead role already set, and the production company clued in many years in advance, this marks a major milestone in development and could signal that the project is in line to meet up with a 2025 release. Foxx, who comic book fans saw most recently when he returned to the role of Electro in the Spider-Man Home franchise, is still on the books as the lead actor, and more casting is likely to follow in the coming weeks and months.

Spawn was a massive hit in the 90s and it was one of the main reasons that Image Comics was able to grow into the undisputed third-largest comic company in western media, cementing McFarlane’s work as an industry great. Despite this stellar record and an impressive return to prominence as recently as January 2022, Blumhouse”s Spawn movie has people questioning if the 90s hero is still relevant enough to lead a solo theatrical project. The answer to that query lies in the recent comic run itself, which sold thousands of copies and contains the King Spawn storyline that the film takes its name (and potentially plot inspiration) from. With the IP being able to move hundreds of thousands of copies at a time when the comic book industry was in a clear downturn, there’s no doubt that Spawn still holds on to a big fanbase. Whether or not those comic book fans turn up for this project is a whole other issue.

The question of audience transfer aside, this is a golden moment for Spawn, as both Marvel and DC are beyond their prime years in the film market, more mature and independent IPs like Invincible and The Boys are dominating the landscape, and Spawn has appeared in many crossovers like the one with Call of Duty in recent times. The stage is set for McFarlane’s film to really make an impact, and fans will be waiting to see it play out.

King Spawn has no official release date but is slated for a hopeful 2025 release by Blumhouse.
