A World of Warcraft player has uncovered a relic from the game’s past, GM Island, while playing in the WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria event. By cleverly using the Warband Map and Kalimdor Scouting Map together, the player revealed this once-secret location, long believed to be removed from the game.
GM Island, historically a mysterious zone for in-game moderators, still appears to exist in some form, much to the surprise and delight of the WoW community.
Highlights
- A player discovered evidence of GM Island in WoW Remix by using The Warband Map and Kalimdor Scouting Map together.
- GM Island, a relic from WoW”s past, was once a mysterious location for GMs and misbehaving players.
One World of Warcraft fan discovered GM Island in WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria by using two different map discovery toys in conjunction. Though this developer-only World of Warcraft location was said to have been removed from the game six years ago, this player shared proof that suggests it still exists in some form.
WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria is a special limited-time game mode where fans play through the 12-year-old expansion with modern convenience in order to earn a bunch of achievements and cosmetics. Until the end of the World of Warcraft event, characters made in this game mode cannot leave Pandaria outside a few special instances.

Here is exactly when World of Warcraft fans can start playing The War Within, both for early access and the full expansion launch a few days later.
However, it seems like this special game mode set one World of Warcraft player up to discover a very different relic from the past. While playing a Timerunner, WoW fan and Redditor Mechgyrasaur was able to discover GM Island, an old location used by in-game moderators before it was removed from the game six years ago, by using the new Warband Map to Everywhere All At Once added in WoW: The War Within”s Pre-Patch, followed by the Kalimdor Scouting Map toy. Outside a quick display on the UI, the mysterious island cannot be found, as it does not appear on any in-game map.
What is GM Island in World of Warcraft?
GM Island was a mysterious in-game location that was once located far northwest of Kalimdor, past Teldrassil. The area was surrounded by unmapped space and kill zones, making it impossible to reach without exploits or GM powers. The island was used by GMs as a base to move around the game world – and as a prison for misbehaving players to be put into time-out early in the game’s existence. Though not a part of the canon world of Azeroth, the EU WoW website even had a short story about two characters on GM Island. Unfortunately, WoW removed GM Island from the game in Patch 8.2 during Battle for Azeroth, in part because it stopped using in-game moderation.Close
Despite this, players who repeat Mechgyrasaur’s instructions will discover the same locations. Fans were shocked by the fact that GM Island still exists in some fashion, immediately joked about it being a new zone in WoW: The War Within, and speculated about how this glitch happened in the first place. They were especially entertained by the second discovered location named “Delete ME” – another relic that tumbled out from behind the development curtain using the same glitch.
Sadly, World of Warcraft Remix: Mists of Pandaria is coming to an end at 7 AM PDT on August 20. Players who need to finish their WoW Remix achievements, farm a little more Bronze, or discover GM Island for themselves using this glitch have less than a day to do so before the event is over.
