Rockstar Games has removed 23 missions from Grand Theft Auto Online as part of its latest content rotation strategy. The update, which went live on August 22, saw the removal of 4 Adversary Modes and 19 Racing Series. Rockstar explained that this decision is part of a new practice aimed at improving matchmaking and making room for fresh content. While some players are disappointed by the loss, the update introduced a new multi-stage Adversary Mode called Assault on ATT-16.

The developer has not indicated when or if the removed missions will return, leaving the future of these features uncertain.

GTA 6 is finally on the horizon, and there is one GTA 5 Online feature that should return for the next evolution of the online experience.

GTA Online Removes 23 Series and Modes

In yet another example of such a move, the game lost close to two dozen missions as part of its latest weekly update, which rolled out on Thursday, August 22. The new patch saw four GTA Online Adversary Modes and 19 Series be removed from the hit live-service game. The former group comprises Assault on Cayo Perico, Bunker, Casino, and Missile Base Adversary Modes. Rockstar hinted at these removals on August 15, when it said that it plans to start rotating select Modes and Racing Series “in and out” starting next week.

But the company did not communicate the extent of these rotations, the first of which turned out to be a big net loss for the game. Specifically, while the August 22 update removed 23 missions, it only added a single new one in the form of the Assault on ATT-16 Adversary Mode. Rockstar cited a desire to improve matchmaking as one of the reasons for this newly established practice of rotating missions. The company said that making room for new GTA Online content also contributed to its decision to begin rotating Modes and Series.Close

It is currently unclear when the newly removed missions might return to the game. Looking at the social media reactions to this move, most fans who cared enough to voice their opinions online aren”t exactly thrilled with the removals. The most cynical of these opinions go as far as to speculate that Rockstar could be planning to return the pulled GTA Online missions as GTA+ membership exclusives. However, the developer-publisher has so far given no indication of that being the plan.

This content rotation happened some 14 months after GTA Online lost a quarter of its vehicles as part of the San Andreas Mercenaries update. Back in May 2024, Rockstar also removed in-game emails from GTA Online, which was another fairly unpopular move among the fandom. As for the sole new addition to the game introduced in the August 22 update, Assault on ATT-16 is a fairly content-packed Adversary Mode that tasks two teams of players with competing against each other across five different stages taking place on the ground, at sea, and in the air.
